Austria needs a vignette for every motorway and expressway. It is digital by default now, tied to your number plate, and 2026 is the last year the windscreen sticker is sold. A handful of alpine tunnels and the Brenner are tolled separately on top.

How to buy
Where to get it

Step by step
- Open shop.asfinag.at or the ASFINAG app, not a reseller site.
- Choose the digital vignette and your period (10-day, 2-month or annual), then type your plate exactly as written.
- Pay by card; a confirmation email arrives. There is no sticker, cameras read your plate.
- A 10-day or 1-day vignette bought online can start the same day. A 2-month or annual one only activates 18 days after an online purchase.
- Need an annual one straight away? Buy it in person at a petrol station instead.
- Keep the confirmation as proof if a camera check is ever disputed.
The traps to avoid
- The 18-day online cooling-off rule is a real trap: an annual or 2-month digital vignette bought online the night before is not valid when you arrive. Buy in person at the border, or order online 18 days early.
- Enforcement is fully automated by gantry cameras. There is no booth, so you can be fined without realising you were caught: a 120 euro substitute toll on the spot, or a 300 to 3,000 euro fine later.
- Reseller sites rank above the official one and add a few euros. Buy only from asfinag.at, the app, or a shop.

Local tips
- If you are only transiting (Germany to Italy over the Brenner, or Salzburg to Slovenia on the A10), add up the tunnel tolls first: you can easily pay 20 to 35 euro on top of the vignette.
- A 1-day vignette (about 9.60 euro) exists and is not shown in the standard three. For a single day's transit it can be the cheapest choice.
- The annual vignette covers 14 months, from December to the end of January next year. Past three or four trips it beats repeated 10-day ones.
- On the A12 Inntal and A13 Brenner, electronic IG-L signs sometimes drop the limit to 100 km/h for air quality. That limit is binding and camera-enforced, with stiff fines.
- Diesel is cheaper here than in Germany or Italy, so fill up in Austria if you can.
