Hungary

Vignette

Hungary runs a fully electronic vignette, the e-matrica.

Overview

Hungary runs a fully electronic vignette, the e-matrica. There is no sticker: cameras read your plate, so it must be tied to your registration before you drive onto any motorway (the 'M' roads) or expressway. It activates immediately, so you can buy it minutes before the border. Prices are set in forint (HUF); the euro figures here are approximate.

How to buy

Where to get it

  • ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu, the official operator site (or its app)
  • Petrol stations and shops just before the border
  • Tobacco shops (Nemzeti Dohanybolt) once you are inside Hungary

Step by step

  1. Open the official site ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu (or its app), not the lookalike reseller sites that add a fee.
  2. Choose category D1: a car up to 3.5 t with at most 7 seats.
  3. Enter your plate's country and registration number exactly as written on the plate.
  4. Pick the period; the 10-day national vignette is the usual choice for passing through.
  5. Pay by card; an e-receipt arrives by email.
  6. It is valid immediately. Keep the receipt, because there is no sticker to show.

The traps to avoid

  • Buy from ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu or a petrol station. The sites that top the search results are resellers that charge several euros extra for the same vignette.
  • Pick category D1 (an ordinary car). The wrong category counts as having no vignette at all.
  • It is plate-linked and camera-enforced, with no sticker. Driving even a short stretch of motorway without one means a penalty charge (potdij).

Local tips

  • It activates the moment you pay. Unlike Austria's online vignette, there is no cooling-off delay, so buying at the border is fine.
  • The 10-day national vignette is right for a transit; the annual one only pays off past roughly fifteen trips.
  • A cheaper 1-day vignette also exists if you only clip a corner of the country.
  • There are no separate car tolls: the e-matrica covers every motorway. The distance-based HU-GO system is for lorries over 3.5 t only.
