Pay per distanceMost Irish tolls are simple barrier plazas you pay at as you pass.
Overview
Most Irish tolls are simple barrier plazas you pay at as you pass. The exception is the M50 around Dublin: it is barrier-free, cameras read your plate, and you must pay online by 8pm the next day or a penalty is added. Foreign and rental drivers miss it constantly because there is nothing to stop at.
About €0.05 per km on toll motorways.Estimate
Fixed tolls at specific plazas, not a per-km charge, so the figure is an effective average. Most roads are free.
How to buy
Where to get it
- Barrier plazas (M1, M3, M4, M7, M8, Port Tunnel and others): cash, card, or a tag
- M50: pay online at eflow.ie or the eFlow app; there is no booth
- An eFlow video account lowers the M50 rate if you register your plate
Step by step
- On a tolled barrier road, pay by cash or card at the plaza.
- On the M50, drive through; the camera reads your plate.
- Note the date you used the M50.
- Pay it at eflow.ie before 8pm the following day, using your plate.
- In a rental car, the company usually pays the M50 and bills you later with an admin fee, so check at pickup.
The traps to avoid
- The M50 has no booth and no cash option. Miss the 8pm next-day deadline and a penalty is issued that grows if ignored.
- Rental companies add an admin fee, often 5 to 15 euro, on top of any toll they pay for you.
- The Dublin Port Tunnel costs about 3.50 euro off-peak but 12 to 13 euro at weekday rush hour.

Local tips
- The M50 is the toll that catches everyone out. Set a phone reminder to pay it by 8pm the next day.
- Ask at rental pickup whether the car has an eToll tag and how the M50 is handled.
- Avoid the Dublin Port Tunnel at weekday rush hour, when it costs four times the off-peak rate.
- Every other Irish toll is a simple plaza; have cash or a card ready.
