Switzerland sells one vignette only: an annual one for CHF 40, valid 14 months from December to the end of January. There is no short-term option. Buy it as a windscreen sticker or as a plate-linked e-vignette. A couple of road tunnels cost extra on top.

Step by step
- Go to via.admin.ch/shop, the only official e-vignette site.
- Pick passenger car and your country of registration.
- Type your plate exactly as written.
- Pay CHF 40 by card.
- It is valid immediately, with no waiting period.
- Keep the confirmation email; nothing needs to be displayed.
The traps to avoid
- The e-vignette is tied to the plate, not the car, so it cannot move to a different plate.
- Checks are by roadside plate reads, not gantries. Get caught without one and it is CHF 200 plus the CHF 40 vignette, on the spot.
- The federal office warns about copycat reseller sites that overcharge and may phish your card. The only official shop is via.admin.ch/shop.
- A sticker must be on the windscreen before you reach a motorway. Carrying it loose counts as not having one.

Local tips
- One vignette covers 14 months: buy the new one in late November and it runs from December to the end of January the year after.
- The e-vignette is easier for visitors: order it before you leave, with no sticker to scrape on or off.
- The Gotthard tunnel is free with the vignette, but the Great St Bernard is not. Budget around 30 euro one-way if your route uses it.
- Fuel is among the most expensive in Europe here, so fill up before you cross in if you can.
