Croatia

Pay per distance

Croatia charges by distance: take a ticket at entry and pay at the exit by card or cash, in euros since 2023.

Overview

Croatia charges by distance: take a ticket at entry and pay at the exit by card or cash, in euros since 2023. An ENC tag gives a fast lane and a discount of up to about a third off-season. The barrier system stays through 2026; a camera-based free-flow system is planned for 2027.

About €0.07 per km on toll motorways.Estimate

Ticket in, pay at exit; about 0.07 euro per km for a car. Zagreb to Split runs near 26 euro. An estimate.

How to buy

Where to get it

  • Toll plazas: card or cash in euros at the exit
  • An ENC tag for the dedicated fast lane
  • ENC tags from HAC (hac.hr), Bina-Istra in Istria, and some petrol stations

Step by step

  1. Take a ticket at the entry lane and keep it.
  2. Follow signs for 'cestarina' (toll) to your exit.
  3. Hand the ticket over or insert it at the booth.
  4. Pay by card or cash in euros; contactless works at most plazas.
  5. With an ENC tag, use the ENC lane and skip the ticket.

The traps to avoid

  • Keep the ticket; losing it means the maximum charge for that motorway.
  • Summer queues at Lucko (Zagreb) and the coastal exits can run one to two hours on peak weekends.
  • Istria's motorways (A8, A9) are run by Bina-Istra, with slightly different rates.

Charged separately

  • Ucka tunnel (A8, toward Istria)€4.50

A separate toll on top of the motorway charge. Approximate; confirm at bina-istra.hr.

Diesel€1.45per litre

Local tips

  • An ENC tag both discounts the toll and skips the summer queues; it pays off over a week-long trip.
  • The coastal road (Jadranska magistrala, D8) parallels the A1 for free, but it is slow and winding.
  • The Peljesac bridge is free, so you no longer cross Bosnia to reach Dubrovnik from Split.
  • Pass the Lucko gate near Zagreb before 7am or after 9pm on summer Fridays to dodge the worst queues.
