Poland

Pay per distance

Since July 2023 the state-run motorways are free for cars, so most of Poland's network costs nothing.

Overview

Since July 2023 the state-run motorways are free for cars, so most of Poland's network costs nothing. Only three privately run sections still charge at barriers: the A1 Gdansk to Torun, the A2 from the German border toward Konin, and the A4 Katowice to Krakow. Pay by cash or card; a car needs no app or tag.

About €0.04 per km on toll motorways.Estimate

Only the three concession sections charge cars; the rest is free. The figure is a blended estimate over a typical route. Prices are in zloty.

How to buy

Where to get it

  • A1 Gdansk to Torun: take a ticket and pay at the exit by card or cash
  • A2 toward Konin: pay the flat rate at each section's plaza
  • A4 Katowice to Krakow: two plazas, about 18 zloty each, card or cash

Step by step

  1. On a state motorway or any S expressway, just drive; there is no toll for cars.
  2. On the A1, take a ticket on entry and pay by distance at the exit.
  3. On the A2 concession, pay the flat rate at each plaza.
  4. On the A4, pay at the two plazas (Myslowice and Balice).
  5. Keep a little zloty cash in case a card lane is closed.

The traps to avoid

  • Cars do not need the e-TOLL app; that is for trucks. Do not try to pay the concession barriers with it.
  • Do not assume the whole A2 is free; the western half toward the border still has barriers.
  • Cash is taken in zloty (and sometimes euro), but change comes in zloty.

Charged separately

  • A1 Gdansk to Torun (AmberOne)€7.00

About 30 zloty end to end for a car, distance-based within the section.

  • A2 toward Konin (Wielkopolska)€28.00

A flat rate per 50 km segment; about 120 zloty for the full Nowy Tomysl to Konin run.

  • A4 Katowice to Krakow (Stalexport)€8.40

Two plazas at about 18 zloty each, 36 zloty total.

City & emission zones

  • Warsaw clean transport zone (SCT)

Central Warsaw bars older cars; in 2026 a non-resident petrol car needs Euro 4, a diesel Euro 5. Enforced by camera. Check before driving an older car into the centre.

Fuel

Petrol€1.40per litre
Diesel€1.45per litre

Local tips

  • Most Polish motorways are free for cars now; only the A1, A2 and A4 concession sections charge.
  • Budget about 45 euro for the full A2 from the border to Konin, or 9 euro for the A4 Katowice to Krakow.
  • Keep some zloty cash as a backup at the barriers.
  • Ignore e-TOLL; it is a truck system, not for car drivers.
