Romania

Vignette

Romania needs an electronic vignette, the rovinieta, for motorways and national roads.

Overview

Romania needs an electronic vignette, the rovinieta, for motorways and national roads. There is no sticker; your plate sits in the CNAIR database and cameras check it. It is one of the cheapest in Europe. The Danube bridge to the coast is tolled separately. Prices are set in lei (RON).

How to buy

Where to get it

  • erovinieta.ro, the official CNAIR site (or its app)
  • Petrol stations (OMV, Petrom, Rompetrol) and post offices
  • Booths at the border on the way in

Step by step

  1. Open erovinieta.ro, the state CNAIR portal, not roviniete.ro or similar resellers.
  2. Pick category A (a car up to 3.5 t).
  3. Type your plate and country of registration.
  4. Choose the period: 10-day, 30-day or annual.
  5. Pay by card; you get an email and SMS.
  6. Bought online it starts at midnight on the date you choose; bought at a petrol station it is immediate.

The traps to avoid

  • Bought online, it activates from 00:00 on your chosen date, not the moment you pay. A late-night border crossing may need a same-day purchase at a petrol station instead.
  • Several sites that rank for 'buy rovinieta' are authorised resellers (roviniete.ro, e-rovinieta.ro and others) that add a fee. erovinieta.ro charges only the state rate.
  • Cameras enforce it; a missing rovinieta is a 500 to 1,000 RON fine.
  • The A2 to the coast needs a separate bridge toll at Fetesti-Cernavoda on top of the rovinieta.

Charged separately

  • Fetesti-Cernavoda Danube bridge (A2 to Constanta)€2.62

A separate toll of about 13 RON each way, on top of the rovinieta. Pay online at taxadepod.ro or at the gate.

Local tips

  • The 10-day rovinieta is only about 6 euro, one of the cheapest vignettes anywhere.
  • Most long routes are two-lane national roads, not motorways, so journeys take longer than the distance suggests.
  • Heading to the coast? Budget the Fetesti-Cernavoda bridge both ways, roughly 5 euro round trip, on top of the vignette.
  • Romania plans to move to emission-based vignette pricing from late 2026, so cleaner cars may pay less and older ones more. Check erovinieta.ro for the current rate.
