United Kingdom

Free for cars

UK roads carry no national toll or vignette.

Overview

UK roads carry no national toll or vignette. The costs to watch are London's two daily charges (the ULEZ and the Congestion Charge), a few cities' Clean Air Zones, and a handful of toll crossings. Prices are in pounds; the euro figures are approximate.

Good news: motorways are free for cars here.

City & emission zones

  • London ULEZ€14.75

12.50 pounds a day for an older car, across all London boroughs, every day. Camera-enforced; pay at tfl.gov.uk. A petrol Euro 4 or diesel Euro 6 car pays nothing, so check your car first.

  • London Congestion Charge€21.25

18 pounds a day in central London on weekdays, 7am to 6pm, on top of the ULEZ. Pay at tfl.gov.uk.

  • Clean Air Zones (Birmingham, Bristol and others)

Birmingham and Bristol charge older cars about 8 to 9 pounds a day; many other cities only charge vans and lorries. Check your plate at gov.uk/clean-air-zones before you drive in.

Toll bridges & tunnels

  • Dartford Crossing (Dart Charge)€4.13

3.50 pounds a crossing, both directions, 6am to 10pm. No barriers: pay online by midnight the day after at gov.uk or face a penalty. The classic UK tourist trap.

  • M6 Toll€13.69

About 11.60 pounds end to end near Birmingham, paid at the barrier. Skips the worst M6 congestion.

  • Mersey Gateway bridge€2.12

About 1.80 pounds a crossing; pay by the day after at merseyflow.co.uk or get a penalty.

  • Tyne Tunnel€3.07

About 2.60 pounds a crossing, cashless only, pay at tt2.co.uk.

Fuel

Petrol€1.65per litre
Diesel€1.70per litre

Local tips

  • The ULEZ now covers all of London, not just the centre. Check your car at tfl.gov.uk before any trip to London.
  • The Dartford Crossing has no booths; many drivers assume it is free. Pay by midnight the next day or a penalty follows you home.
  • Drive through central London on a weekday and you may owe both the ULEZ and the Congestion Charge in one day.
  • Before any UK city, run your plate through gov.uk/clean-air-zones; Birmingham and Bristol charge cars, most others do not.
