- Newer barrier-free sections (A79, A13/A14): pay online within a few days, there is no booth
Step by step
- Take the paper ticket at the entry barrier and keep it safe.
- Drive to your exit on the same autoroute.
- At the exit barrier, insert the ticket and pay by card or cash.
- Many unstaffed lanes are card-only, so keep a chip or contactless card ready.
- Or fit a Liber-t tag and use the orange 't' lanes; it debits automatically.
- On a barrier-free section, note the road and pay online within the window (usually 72 hours).
The traps to avoid
- Lose the ticket and you are charged the maximum for that whole motorway.
- Some lanes are tag-only with no card or cash option; check the lane signs before you commit.
- For city Crit'Air zones you must display the sticker. Order it only from certificat-air.gouv.fr (about 4.61 euro). Reseller sites charge 15 to 40 euro for the same thing and some are scams.

City & emission zones
- Crit'Air low-emission zones (Paris, Lyon, Grenoble, Strasbourg and more)€4.61
You must show a Crit'Air sticker in these zones, and the oldest cars are barred on bad-air days. Order it from the official certificat-air.gouv.fr for a few euro, not from a reseller. It does not expire and works in every French zone.

Local tips
- Order the Crit'Air sticker at least two weeks ahead; it ships by post and you can be fined in any big-city zone without it.
- Autoroutes get expensive over distance. The free N-roads run parallel and are scenic, but slower.
- The Mont Blanc and Frejus tunnels to Italy each cost over 56 euro one way; a return ticket is cheaper if you come back.
- A Liber-t tag is worth it in July and August, when queues on the A7 and A9 south can stretch for kilometres.
